Climbing rose

Karl Hetzl bred Super Excelsa as an improved version of the popular winter-hardy old variety Excelsa. It was one of his first hybrids to receive the prestigious ADR certificate – the variety is more disease-resistant than Excelsa and blooms repeatedly. It blooms in large clusters of double, bright crimson flowers with white centres. They fade to purple, and the petals turn silvery pink on the reverse side. The variety is not as vigorous as Excelsa and can hardly be called a climber, but the flowers appear throughout the summer after the first, very abundant flowering. The foliage is dark, and the bush is spreading. Well suited for obelisks and low supports, as well as a ground cover rose, it is magnificent on a tall weeping stem. The variety is very winter hardy.
