The shrub is pyramidal and spreading, with strong, very thorny shoots. The leaves are deep dark green, large, and glossy. The flowers are a rich red, fading to a purple hue, semi-double (9-16 petals), with a faint fragrance, arranged in clusters of 3-5 at the ends of the shoots, blooming until late autumn. It looks good in group plantings as well as a solitary plant in lawns or untrimmed hedges. It is resistant to black spot and powdery mildew.
