Tea Hybrid
In Germany, it is called Gloria Dei, in Italy – Gioia, and in English-speaking countries – Peace. It is the most famous rose in the world and probably still the most widespread. The flowers are huge: the variety is so strong that when it first appeared, it set a completely new standard for rose quality. It was most popular in the 1950s and 1960s. The flowers are incredibly large and beautiful at all stages of opening, from elegant buds to fully open blooms, although the variety is very variable in cultivation. For example, the color is usually soft yellow with a raspberry edge, fading to creamy pink, and in practice changes depending on the season and growing location. The fragrance also changes. The scent is strong, expressive, sweet, and fruity. The bush grows large, with strong petals and large dark green leaves.
The most popular rose in world history. A deservedly popular rose. Disease and winter-hardy, easy to grow.
The history of this rose is a true melodrama. The rose was created in France during World War II and was exported unnamed as cuttings in diplomatic luggage to the USA just before France was occupied by the Nazis. The rose was propagated in an American nursery and released in 1945. The rose returned with peace to liberated France and therefore received the name Peace. Later, the variety adorned all the tables of UN meetings.
